On-the-Job Search, Work Effort and Hyperbolic Discounting

چکیده

This paper assesses theoretically and examines empirically the effects of time preferences on two types of career investments: work effort and on-the-job search activities. Whereas the former increases the probability of getting promoted, the latter affect the chance of receiving an outside job offer. The aim of this study is to test the exponential versus the hyperbolic discounting model within a framework of on-thejob behaviour. I develop a theoretical model which allows for endogenous work effort and on-the-job search intensity. The central assumption of the model is that the gains of promotion are larger but more delayed than the gains of (external) job mobility. Depending on whether exponential or hyperbolic discounting is assumed, this model leads to different predictions of the effect of patience on career investments. I make use of the CentER/DNB Household Survey (1996-2007), a large Dutch longitudinal survey containing detailed information about individual time preferences, on-the-job search behaviour and indicators of work effort. This study is the first to assess empirically the relation between time preferences and on-the-job search behaviour. The results provide support for the hyperbolic discounting model.  AbstractIntroduction: Delay discounting (DD) means prefering small immediate rewards to large delayed rewards. This study was to assess delay discounting and the correlation of our findings with that of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI).Method: In a cross-sectional study, DD and time perspective were investigated in 93 medical interns by means of a computer software and ZTPI. In d...

A multi Agent System Based on Modified Shifting Bottleneck and Search Techniques for Job Shop Scheduling Problems

This paper presents a multi agent system for the job shop scheduling problems. The proposed system consists of initial scheduling agent, search agents, and schedule management agent. In initial scheduling agent, a modified Shifting Bottleneck is proposed. That is, an effective heuristic approach and can generate a good solution in a low computational effort. In search agents, a hybrid search ap...

Career Consequences of Hyperbolic Time Preferences

Career Consequences of Hyperbolic Time Preferences * In this paper I address theoretically and assess empirically the effect of impatience on workers’ on-the-job behavior. Theoretically, short-run impatience explains several empirical regularities concerning job mobility and account for different on-the-job behaviors. On-the-job search on one hand and ”collaborative behaviors” such as low absen...

Discounting of delayed rewards is not hyperbolic.

Delay discounting refers to decision-makers' tendency to value immediately available goods more than identical goods available only after some delay. In violation of standard economic theory, decision-makers frequently exhibit dynamic inconsistency; their preferences change simply due to the passage of time. The standard explanation for this behavior has appealed to the nature of decision-maker...
